Sgt. First Class Richard Leonard Butler : Joel Tumlin contacted the 87th gallery asking about info on his great Uncle, Sgt. First Class Richard Leonard Butler:

I am researching my Great Uncle’s time in the war.
He served in the 549th AAA AW.
From your photo gallery/info on Battery C –
I see that he was not in this Battery.

Richard died when I was three years old.

Here is the most accurate information I have on my great uncle.
All of this information about Richard comes from his youngest brother, Robert O. Butler, who passed in 2006.
Bob gave me all of Richard's medals from WWII.
I have them along with several of his pictures in a shadow box in my home. I have two young daughters that I want to tell as much about his service to this great country as possible. I am aware that many of that generation do not consider themselves as heroes.
I have a different opinion.
This country is the greatest on earth because of their sacrifices.

I want to know all I can about my great Uncle's service.
Please post these photos and information.
I hope to discover what Battery of the 549th that Richard did serve with,
Maybe someone who knew him, who served in the same Battery,
Or who could guide me to find more information.

Around two years ago, I e-mailed a gentleman named Walter Clarke who told me he was in the 549th AAA HQ Battery, Medical Detachment- he added Btn Surgeons Assistant, Lt., Medical Officer.
He gave me some information about the units activity during the Battle of the Bulge and the fight for Metz, France.
I can not find anything more than this.

I know that there was a fire that destroyed many military records in St. Louis around 1973. I do not know if any of Richard's records could be found elsewhere or if they exist.

I want to honor this relative, who probably would just say he did nothing extraordinary, but just did his job.

Richard Leonard Butler DOB 4-2-24 in St. Louis, MO.
He graduated from high school in 1941.
He worked briefly at Brashear Truck Lines before he was drafted in 1941 at age 18.

He was assigned to the 549th AAA Bn and trained at Camp Edwards, MA. Richard was not selected to participate in the D-Day landing.
He was billeted in "Littlecote Manor" during his stay in England.
Later, he entered France through LeHavre and was assigned to Patton's Third Army. He was awarded the Bronze Star for his action during the Battle of the Bulge.

Uncle Bob said that Richard had a copy of a Christmas card with Patton’s weather prayer. Unfortunately, the letter's whereabouts are unknown.

Richard also was a part of the liberation of the Buchenwald death camp.
Upon Germany's surrender, Richard served as an expediter in an effort to return troops to the states. Uncle Bob said that Rich processed a full bird colonel, who was 22 years old. This was a unusual situation where all of his superior officers were killed or wounded. Richard worked at a embarkation port in France named the "Pall Mall" (named for cigarettes). Richard was given a luger and holster by a surrendering German officer. At one time, it was given to his oldest brother and my grandfather, Paul Butler. My grandfather either sold or traded it- it hurts thinking about it today.
Richard also served in the Korean War with his younger brother, Bob.
My grandfather Paul was the oldest brother. (Granddad Paul was turned down for military service due to a hearing injury he sustained as a child that impaired his hearing throughout his lifetime. Paul did work for NASA and played a role in helping the US put a man on the moon.)

After the war, Richard worked for the railroad. .
Richard is buried in Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, St. Louis, MO.

Richard’s service number was 37610091.
His rank was Sgt. First Class (3 up, two down).
Uncle Bob closed these notes with the statement that Richard,
"..in his point of view was the greatest soldier that ever wore the uniform."

THE ARDENNES FOOTSOLDIER
Winter ('44-'45)

The din of battle summons all who hear the blare of the trumpets call.
The soldier stands in ready ranks in rows beside the mighty tanks.
The battleground in Ardennes green,
now lain in winter's snow-white sheen
The stark bare foxhole is my bed with splintered fir boughs overhead.

Here I lie with body numbed protected from the German gun;
Through sleepless night I lie and pray thinking of the dawn of day.
My prayers that come from half closed mouth are seared with curse words that I shout.
From snowy lair I leave each day to meet the foe where death may lay.

From Bitter Woods to open field I run the gamut without shield
while shells of deadly eighty-eight before me burst to halt my gait.
The windblown snow blinds my eyes, the low hung fog dims the skies
with bandoleers across my back-- my body strains against my pack.

My trigger hand is numb and still
but ready, fixed and trained to kill.

I cross the field of a yesterday where soldier's frozen bodies lay-
Once in perfect battle lines they stood;
Now lay in grotesque forms like logs of wood.

Lord, that I may live this day; protect me from a soldier's grave
many are the battle dead o'er which some day
a soldier's flag shall wave.

347th Regimental Crest - "DARE YOUR BEST" - "OUR OBJECTIVE TAKEN" : Devised after combat in Europe.
When the 347th Infantry first entered combat on December 14, 1944,
its colors bore a crest with a plain field of blue, and carried the challenge "DARE YOUR BEST"....

Accepting the challenge, the men of the Regiment fought their way through
France, Belgium and Luxembourg and Germany adding victory after victory to this field.

With the unconditional surrendeer of all German Forces, they added the final answer, "OUR OBJECTIVE TAKEN"...

The crown of the crest is topped with the Combat Infantry Badge.

Below the crown and above the field of blue is a row of Dragon's Teeth over German Colors,
commemorating the smashing of the Siegfried Line and the battle of Germany.

In the blue field is found a salient, bordered on the left with the colors of France and on the right with the colors of Belgium.

This salient represents the battle of the Ardennes and carries a background of white for the severe winter fighting.

In the center of this white field is the "Golden Acorn" of the 87th Infantry Division encircled by the Colors of Luxembourg.

Surrounding these colors is found the deep blue circle signifying the successful assaults of the Moselle and Rhine Rivers.

Since the 347th is a Reserve Regiment, the entire crest is surmounted by the figure of the Minuteman, symbol of perpetual preparedness.

This photo taken from the original History book is in Color...
All subsequent books that were printed the Crest is in Black & white.

The Crest was designed by pfc Jack Stuart, Company "E", 347th Infantry.

Update JUNE - 2007 - per email from Karen (Gorman) Baker.
Her Dad (Edward J. Gorman) was in the 345th Regiment (Company G).
Karen said she just received the most recent Golden Acorn News,
and one of the stories reminded her husband that he had taken pictures of these grave markers while on a trip to Europe several years ago.
They are from 2 different military cemeteries (Hamm in Luxembourg and St. Avold in France).

There is also a photo of the 87th Division plaque at the Bastogne memorial.

She wanted to pass them along in tribute....and to anyone who might be interested.
If any family member of these men see this - please let us know.

Thanks to wonderful people like the Gorman's - who pull out their pictures and send them to this site - for all to view.

I would also like to thank you on behalf of my family for posting this picture it means a great deal to us.
My Grandfather is probably smiling now knowing that his family knows where his little brother final resting place is and again Thank You!

This man Richard Boshey was my relative. He was the little brother of my Grandfather, John Boshey Sr.
My grandfather was suppose to go to war but decided not to.
Perhaps, that was the smarest thing he ever done in his life.
John Boshey Sr. passed away August 19, 2006 at the age of 94.
My Grandfather always wondered where they put his grave.
This is truly amazing, thanks so much to whoever took this photo.
My family we'll surely be visiting Richard Bosheys' grave in St. Avold, France one day.

The Mardasson Memorial is one huge monument in Bastogne,Belgium.

Top pic is of the Memorial itself. Bottom pic shows memorial and the nearby Historical Center.

One of the supporting columns of the Mardasson Memorial, of which there are many....has the insignia or logos of each Division....

SHERMAN TANK - McAULIFFE SQUARE - BASTOGNE, BELGIUM : Removed for restorations on November 6, 2006. The Sherman Tank will stay in the Rocourt Arsenal until next April or May and will be cleaned, repainted and refitted.
All the inhabitants of Bastogne are already waiting for its come back.

TUSCON, ARIZONA - Presidio Park - BATTLE OF THE BULGE MONUMENT : 6ft.high/5 feet wide - weighing 2800 pounds.
What a beautiful Monument!

The Chapter #53 Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge (VBOB) are very proud of this monument,
so I decided to have a gallery of it's own to have it noticed and picture proudly displayed!

It can also be viewed under the gallery titled:
"87th Infantry Division" - all monuments, signs, and plaques that Honor or Recognize this division/units - especially Battle Of The Bulge" - Page 2.

This Battle of the Bulge Monument is located at:
Presidio Park facing the City Hall and Federal Bldg in Tucson, Arizona.

Southern Arizona Chapter #53 VBOB dedicated this monument on
May 30 2003.

Chapter President John Westover headed up the project.

National President Lou Cunningham oversaw the dedication.

Per Mr. George W. McGee;
President, Chapter 53 VBOB - Southern Arizona:

"A lot of work went into the project,
and we give so much thanks to the chapter president at that time, John Westover, for all the work he did.
Mr. Westover designed the original sketch, and then had an artist finish it.
The monument was built in Tucson.

The monument was funded entirely by donations by members of Chapter 53,
of which there were approximately 65 members at that time.
We have presently about 50 members."

Mr. Westover passed away in June of 2005.
Mr. George W. McGee was nominated and elected to the office soon after.

Last year, Mr. McGee had photos of the front and back enlarged to poster size.
He then made a plywood replica about four feet high that will now be included in their
Veterans Day parade each year.

They had it mounted in an open army trailer behind a 1943 Jeep that had been restored by one of their members.

They are proud that they received the,
"MOST OUTSTANDING VETERANS AWARD" in last November's parade out of 400 entries!

I would like to invite any members out there to have their picture taken with the monument - and I would add them to this indiviual gallery!
Anyone else also invited to do so, along with why the monument is special to you.

St. Partick's Day celebration -Worcester, MA. : March 11, 2007 with our VBOB Chapter.
A great day for everyone!

Here are some members of the Central Mass. Chapter 22 VBOB who marched in the parade. They also had two decorated vehicles.....

125,000 energetic kids attended the St. Patrick Day Parade, Worcester, MA.
The Little people in green were roving about!
Two Competitors of the "Mad Hatter" competition ...also of Chin Wiskers!!

St. Nazaire, France Memorial : Dedicated to the US Army Expeditionary Forces(A.E.F.)of World War One, at St. Nazaire, France, their landing place April, 1917.

A.E.F. Memorial in St. Nazaire Harbor.
With outstreached arms and a sword in his hand, a doughboy stands on the back of a giant eagle that has just landed.

It was designed by Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, Sculptress, with Studio in New York City.

My father, Florence J. McAuliffe was a sculptor in her employ and worked on creating this monument.

The monument was destroyed by the Nazis during their occupation of France in 1940.

St. Nazaire became an important Nazi Submarine Base in WW-II....

I retain to this day the cast iron eagle's claw which was used as a model for the monument.

the monument was rebuilt ~1989!

St. Nazaire became an important Nazi Submarine Base in WW-II....
A British raid in which an explosives packed destroyer was rammed into the lock gates of the dry dock, killing 250 Germans and putting the lock out of action for the remaider of the war has been hailed as the greatest special forces raid of all time.

The giant Normandie Dry Dock, the only one capable of taking the largest German battleships, was put out of action until the end of the war. A total of 5 VCs were awarded for what is generally known as

BOPPARD AM REIN, GERMANY PLAQUE : Boppard am Rein, Germany where the 87th Infantry Division crossed over the Rhine River on the night of March 24, 1945.

Other crossings were made at Rhens and Brey.

The 87th Infantry Division Association visited here June 1996.

HYANNIS, CAPE COD - MASSACHUSETTS - BATTLE OF THE BULGE MONUMENT DEDICATION : Dedicated by the Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge at the Sept. 1996 VBOB reunion at Hyannis, Cape Cod Massachusetts.

The monument is on the Town common at the east end of Main Street.

The Monument was donated by Mr. De Christopher of the
DeChristopher Monument Works of Philadelphia.

Stanley Wojtusik was acting President at the time and chairman of the Reunion.

There were over 400 in attendance!

Honoring fellow 87th Infantry Division Friends... Here's to William Regis O'Malley : The world has lost another of the Greatest Generation...
It is with sadness that I relay the passing of my father…William Regis O’Malley of the Golden Acorn Division.
He looked forward to all his army reunions and receiving emails from all of you. Know that he passed away peacefully.
I would like to think it was a happy death if there is such a thing.
He will be buried in the Cemetery of the Alleghenies with a military service.
He even chose a military casket.

Age 84, on Thursday, February 7, 2008 of Whitehall, formerly of Munhall.
Loving husband of 57 years to Frances J.;
beloved father of Mary Ellen (Robert) Martin of Whitehall and the late Timothy Regis;
brother of Michael J. O'Malley, Jr. of FL;
proud grandfather of Thomas R. and Sean P. Martin.

Regis was a member of the Gaelic Arts Society,
Chairman of the Irish Room at the University of Pittsburgh and

Prayers and Thoughts for Families of Virginia Tech : Today we went to Jefferson Barracks Park - St. Louis, MO.
We sat on a bench overlooking the Mississippi River and ate our lunch.

We met 3 wonderful Veterans who were at the Battle of the Bulge Monument
that is located by this beautiful overlook of the river.

We listened to many interesting stories from them about their time in the war,
and thanked them for their service.

As is with every Veteran we seem to meet - we also discussed many other topics -
asking them many questions about life, how they have endured many hardships,
and still came through emotionally and have such a zest for everyday things..

We paused for a moment of prayer for all the families of Virginia Tech -
noting the flags in the park at the Battle of the Bulge monument were half mast
in mourning for them.

This gallery is for all at Virginia Tech who are going through hard times, sadness, or emotional duress.
You are forever changed, but do know many have you in their thoughts and prayers,
and we hope for comfort and peace in your heart in the days ahead..

WREATHS ACROSS AMERICA - December - 2007 : Vans arrived in Foxboro, MA on Monday from Maine on its journey to Arlington Cemetery , VA.

The wreaths will be distributed to hundreds of volunteers to be placed at the burial stones of our beloved veteran Heros.

The Cent. Mass. Chapter-22, Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge will be represented at the Cemetery when the parent Organization pays their respects at The Wreath Laying at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and at their own Monument, a gift of the Belgium and Luxembourg Governments.

We are the Central Mass. Chapt.-22 Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge.
We shall join our comrads at Arlington, VA on December 13-17 for the annual Commemorative Ceremony of the VBOB
and lay wreaths at the Unknown Soldiers Monument and then at our Monument at Arlington Cemetery.

Our Monument is a gift of the Belgium and Luxembourg Governments whom US soldiers liberated from the Nazis in WW-II.
My cousin, Mary McAuliffe of Nevada voliunteered to lay wreaths this year.

Our National President is Stan Wojtusik, who is on the Board of Directors of Wreaths of America.
We are privilaged to join in honoring all our Veterans at this time of year.

This is "I" Company of the 347th Infantry.
Actually the Group did not get to La Roche, but entered fighting in the
Ardennes at Moircy, Belgium.
Shown receiving food in his mess kit is John Olson of Arlington Hieghts, IL.
He is the immediate Past Commander of the 87th Infantry Division Association.
These men just received the newly isssued galoshes seen over their combat boots.
Mal Grant placed the 347th Regimental Crest in the lower corner.

describing photo and giving information about it:

Dear Sirs:
For your information I have enclosed the famous and popular photo found in most Army History books related to the 'Battle of the Bulge'....Unfortunately most books do not give credit to the photo and identify it. The photo is of I-Company, 347th Inf.; 87th Inf. Div. It is an Army Siganl Corps photo with the caption,
"On the road to La Roche".....Unfortunately the unit did not go to La Roche but went into action in January 1945at Moircy,Tillet, Bonnerue in Belgium. The unit arrives here to get the new issue of galoshes as seen in the photo. The soldier with carbine over shoulder receiving his portion is John Olson of Arlington Heights, ILL and still lives there. Other soldiers are identified. Tom Hewlet with the forlorn eyes died early after the war, but his son Tom Hewlett and wife Pat attend the 87th Div. Assoc. Reunions as does Olson and his wife.The Company Commander of I-Company, 347 Inf. was and still is Captain Ray E.Miles, who lives in Richmond, VA.
I am sending you this information for your observation and possiblity for your Headquarters to properly identify this photo for posterity.
My qualifications are that I am a former member of M-347; 87th Inf. Div WW-II. I am the Past Commander of the 87th Inf. Div. Association; I am current Vice Pres. of Chapters for the National Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge Inc; I am current Pres. of the Cent. Mass. Chapt.-22;VBOB....
This photo tells a lot; Just look at it ; examine it and from the clothing and the surrounding snow draped fir trees, one may get an inkling of what it was like in the ARDENNES CAMPAIGN during WW-II.

John W. Olson of Rolling Meadows Services for John W. Olson, 83, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, at Matz Funeral Home, 410 E. Rand Road, Mount Prospect. Born Sept. 2, 1919, in Chicago, he died Tuesday, April 8, 2003, at home. Interment will be private. Mr. Olson was a retired cable splicer for Commonwealth Edison. He was a World War II Army veteran. He was the beloved husband of the late Rita.

This is the last family photo to be taken.
We had just returned to the condo from Christmas Eve mass.
Starting left to right are:
Bob Martin (son-in-law), Frances O’Malley,
MaryEllen Martin (daughter), grandson Tom Martin,
Regis O’Malley, and grandson Sean Martin.

We had a very special Christmas in 2007.
We went to Fort Lauderdale, Florida for 10 days for a family Christmas.

I kept telling everyone that this would be the Christmas to remember and “pulled out all the stops” when it came to planning activities. I just thought we would not have the money to do it in 2008…never thinking it would be dad’s last Christmas with us!

The giant Normandie Dry Dock, the only one capable of taking the largest German battleships, was put out of action until the end of the war. A total of 5 VCs were awarded for what is generally known as
"The Greatest Raid of All".

Today we went to Jefferson Barracks Park - St. Louis, MO.
We sat on a bench overlooking the Mississippi River and ate our lunch.

We met 3 wonderful Veterans who were at the Battle of the Bulge Monument
that is located by this beautiful overlook of the river.

We listened to many interesting stories from them about their time in the war,
and thanked them for their service.

As is with every Veteran we seem to meet - we also discussed many other topics -
asking them many questions about life, how they have endured many hardships,
and still came through emotionally and have such a zest for everyday things..

We paused for a moment of prayer for all the families of Virginia Tech -
noting the flags in the park at the Battle of the Bulge monument were half mast
in mourning for them.

This gallery is for all at Virginia Tech who are going through hard times, sadness, or emotional duress.
You are forever changed, but do know many have you in our thoughts and prayers,
and we hope for comfort and peace in your heart in the days ahead..

An excerpt from his entry on that website:

"Jim was discharged from the Army on December 15, 1945 at Camp Upton, Patchogue, Long Island.
He married his wife, the former Dolly Tagliareni, in 1949. They have two sons, and two grandsons.
He retired in 1982 after working for 35 years as a mailman for the Bayonne Post Office.
Says Jim:
"It seems the Acorn patch on my shoulder ended up in my heart,
for I feel blessed to have friends in the 87th.''

Battle of the Bulge

This is letter sent to Army HQ by John McAuliffe
describing photo and giving information about it:

Dear Sirs:
For your information I have enclosed the famous and popular photo found in most Army History books related to the
"Battle of the Bulge"....

Unfortunately most books do not give credit to the photo and identify it.

The photo is of I-Company, 347th Inf.; 87th Infantry Division.
It is an Army Signal Corps photo with the caption,
"On the road to La Roche".....

Unfortunately the unit did not go to La Roche but went into action in January 1945 at Moircy,Tillet, Bonnerue in Belgium.

The unit arrives here to get the new issue of galoshes as seen in the photo.

The soldier with carbine over shoulder receiving his portion is John Olson of Arlington Heights, ILL and still lives there.

Other soldiers are identified. Tom Hewlet with the forlorn eyes died early after the war, but his son Tom Hewlett and wife Pat attend the 87th Div. Assoc. Reunions as does Olson and his wife.

The Company Commander of I-Company, 347 Inf. was and still is Captain Ray E.Miles, who lives in Richmond, VA.

I am sending you this information for your observation and possiblity for your Headquarters to properly identify this photo for posterity.

My qualifications are that I am a former member of M-347;
87th Inf. Div WW-II. I am the Past Commander of the 87th Inf. Div. Association; I am current Vice Pres. of Chapters for the National Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge Inc; I am current Pres. of the Cent. Mass. Chapt.-22;VBOB....

This photo tells a lot; Just look at it ; examine it and from the clothing and the surrounding snow draped fir trees, one may get an inkling of what it was like in the ARDENNES CAMPAIGN during WW-II.

The world has lost another of the Greatest Generation...

It is with sadness that I relay the passing of my father…
William Regis O’Malley of the Golden Acorn Division.

He looked forward to all his army reunions and receiving emails from all of you.
Know that he passed away peacefully.
I would like to think it was a happy death if there is such a thing.
He will be buried in the Cemetery of the Alleghenies with a military service.
He even chose a military casket.

The Medieval Marksburg Castle at Braubach on the Rhine River seen from Rhens and Brey where the 347th Regiment attempted and made crossings of the Rhine River March 25, 1945 - WWII.

TUSCON, ARIZONA
BATTLE OF THE BULGE MONUMENT

The monument is 6ft. high and 5 feet wide, weighing 2800 pounds.

It is located at:
Presidio Park facing the City Hall and Federal Bldg in Tucson, AZ.

Southern Arizona Chapter #53 VBOB dedicated this monument on
May 30 2003.

Chapter President John Westover headed up the project.

National President Lou Cunningham oversaw the dedication.

What a beautiful monument!
The chapter #53 VBOB are very proud of it.

Per Mr. George W. McGee;
President, Chapter 53 VBOB - Southern Arizona:

"A lot of work went into the project, and we give so much thanks to the chapter president at that time, John Westover, for all the work he did.
Mr. Westover designed the original sketch,
and then had an artist finish it.

The monument was built in Tucson.

The monument was funded entirely by donations by members of Chapter 53,
of which there were approximately 65 members at that time.
We have presently about 50 members."

Mr. Westover passed away in June of 2005.
Mr. George W. McGee was nominated and elected to the office soon after.

Last year, Mr. McGee had photos of the front and back enlarged to poster size.
He then made a plywood replica about four feet high that will now be included in their Veterans Day parade each year.

They had it mounted in an open army trailer behind a 1943 Jeep that had been restored by one of their members.

They are proud that they received the,
"MOST OUTSTANDING VETERANS AWARD" in last November's parade out of 400 entries!

I would like to invite any members out there to have their picture taken with the monument - and I would add them to this indiviual gallery!
Anyone else also invited to do so, along with why the monument is special to you.

Per Mr. John McAuliffe:

This crucifixion plaque was sculptured by my Dad, Florence McAuliffe for his father's gravestone...Timothy J. McAuliffe (also a sculptor).

After 60 years it had gathered a deep stained green patina.....

I spent hours removing it and applying a bronze laquer stain and a sealant spray over that.

Message from one of our 87th ID Veterans - John McAuliffe:

We are the Central Mass. Chapt.-22 Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge.
We shall join our comrads at Arlington, VA on December 13-17, 2007
for the annual Commemorative Ceremony of the VBOB and lay wreaths
at the Unknown Soldiers Monument and then at our Monument at Arlington Cemetery.

Our Monument is a gift of the Belgium and Luxembourg Governments whom US soldiers liberated from the Nazis in WW-II.
My cousin, Mary McAuliffe of Nevada voliunteered to lay wreaths this year.

Our National President is Stan Wojtusik, who is on the Board of Directors of Wreaths of America.
We are privilaged to join in honoring all our Veterans at this time of year.

Because of his sharing of this event - I contacted the national cemetery here in St. Louis;
Jefferson Barracks and found they were participating in this event.

Wreath ceremony honors fallen at Jefferson Barracks
Friday, December 28, 2007

Seven wreaths commemorating the Wreaths Across America project were placed at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery Dec. 15, 2007.

The ceremony was held in conjunction with a national minute of silence and the laying of wreaths at Arlington National Cemetery at noon, Dec. 15, 2007.

Wreaths Across America has honored America's military since it was started 15 years ago by a Harrington, Me, company. Debra Henderson, representing the Air Force branch, placed a wreath at the marker of an Air Force B-17 crew, which had crashed in 1943.
Henderson did it in return for the kindness of a gentleman in England, who helped research her own uncle's B-17 crash (Tech. Sgt. Wayne F. Laubert and crew) in 1944 over England.

The gentleman found the area of the crash site, took photos for her family and laid flowers there a few years ago.

One who asked Debra for a photo of this particular marker at Jefferson Barracks was the family of a 92 year-old woman who had lost her boyfriend, Capt. Richard W. Pugh, during World War II. The woman had not attended his funeral when his body was returned for reburial at Jefferson Barracks after the war.

She had not kept in touch with his family, had gone on in life, and later married, but still had a place in her heart that ached after all these years for him.

Major David Miller named each branch and who was being represented. The motorcycle "Patriot Guard Riders" represented the POW/MIA and taps was played by a military bugler.
