Honoring fellow 87th Infantry Division Friends... Here's to William Regis O'Malley : The world has lost another of the Greatest Generation... It is with sadness that I relay the passing of my father…William Regis O’Malley of the Golden Acorn Division. He looked forward to all his army reunions and receiving emails from all of you. Know that he passed away peacefully. I would like to think it was a happy death if there is such a thing. He will be buried in the Cemetery of the Alleghenies with a military service. Remembering the Battle of the Bulge : Dec. 16, 1944 - 63 yrs ago...Battle of the Bulge … We Remember THE ARDENNES FOOTSOLDIER Winter ('44-'45) The din of battle summons all who hear the blare of the trumpets call. The soldier stands in ready ranks in rows beside the mighty tanks. The battleground in Ardennes green, now lain in winter's snow-white sheen The stark bare foxhole is my bed with splintered fir boughs overhead. Here I lie with body numbed protected from the German gun; Through sleepless night I lie and pray thinking of the dawn of day. My prayers that come from half closed mouth are seared with curse words that I shout. From snowy lair I leave each day to meet the foe where death may lay. From Bitter Woods to open field I run the gamut without shield while shells of deadly eighty-eight before me burst to halt my gait. The windblown snow blinds my eyes, the low hung fog dims the skies with bandoleers across my back-- my body strains against my pack. My trigger hand is numb and still but ready, fixed and trained to kill. I cross the field of a yesterday where soldier's frozen bodies lay- Once in perfect battle lines they stood; Now lay in grotesque forms like logs of wood. Lord, that I may live this day; protect me from a soldier's grave many are the battle dead o'er which some day a soldier's flag shall wave. Written by John E. "549th AAA AW BN BTRY C" : Gallery dedicated to Ivan Muilenburg who proudly served in the 549th. His son, Tim Muilenburg, is searching for anyone who may have known his father during the war, or is interested in sharing their stories about serving in the 549th AAA AW, or anyone that had their family member serve with this unit. My Uncle, Melvin Amelung, also served in this unit. Please make contact if you are connected in any way to any of these names shown in this gallery of names under this picture! Also if you have timeline of where this unit was for month of December - 1944. Morning reports could not be located for this unit for this month at national records center. UPDATE 8-2007 We have found and talked with two wonderful gentlemen from this unit! Cpl Howard A. Rishel (in unit pic – he is in 1st row - #21 from left) Sgt Wayne L. Luedke ( in unit pic – he is 2nd row - # 9 from left) Both were very humble in their discussing their time/place in the war. When Mr. Luedke gave me permission to give his name, he stated, “I guess that would be fine – but just don’t make me out a hero anywhere..…I was just one of 16 million – I was just a Buck Sgt.” and “put my picture small.” A news article that featured Mr. Luedke describing his time/place in the war serving in the 549th has now been posted on the main 87th ID page under "News Articles" It is titled, "CALL HIM LUCKY" He recalls maybe three more men who were from around St, Louis, MO Cpl August Mormino – (In unit pic - he is in 5th row from bottom # 26th from left), Pvt Edward C. Merkel – (In unit pic – he is in 4th row from bottom - #12 from left), Pvt Robert Smith – (In unit pic – he is in 5th row from bottom # 21 from left). The 549th AAA has had several reunions in St. Louis, and Branson, MO, but as far as he knows, there hasn’t been one in several years. Update - Aug - 2007 Mr. Luedke gracioulsy sent me original pictures he took during his service and okayed me to scan and place on this gallery. It will take a few days to get all scanned and placed. Again, we would appreciate any posting of comments or info after viewing these photos. Update - September - 2007 - Found PFC Laverne White Mr. Ivan Muilenburg's son, Tim Muilenburg, saw Mr. White's picture in the latest edition of the Golden Acorn (the magazine of the 87th ID)! From there he made contact and met him -both living in Iowa. He shared information - and gave Tim a Roster with names/addresses. We are so grateful. My dad sent letters to many but most were returned - now deceased. Mr. White's individual photo has been added to this gallery. Update - December - 2007 Cpl August Mormino's son, Tony Mormino contacted me after finding his Dad's name listed here! I sent him my research story and information about all contacts made and then he called Mr. Luedke. 347th Regimental Crest - "DARE YOUR BEST" - "OUR OBJECTIVE TAKEN" : Devised after combat in Europe. When the 347th Infantry first entered combat on December 14, 1944, its colors bore a crest with a plain field of blue, and carried the challenge "DARE YOUR BEST".... Accepting the challenge, the men of the Regiment fought their way through France, Belgium and Luxembourg and Germany adding victory after victory to this field. With the unconditional surrendeer of all German Forces, they added the final answer, "OUR OBJECTIVE TAKEN"... The crown of the crest is topped with the Combat Infantry Badge. Below the crown and above the field of blue is a row of Dragon's Teeth over German Colors, commemorating the smashing of the Siegfried Line and the battle of Germany. In the blue field is found a salient, bordered on the left with the colors of France and on the right with the colors of Belgium. This salient represents the battle of the Ardennes and carries a background of white for the severe winter fighting. In the center of this white field is the "Golden Acorn" of the 87th Infantry Division encircled by the Colors of Luxembourg. Surrounding these colors is found the deep blue circle signifying the successful assaults of the Moselle and Rhine Rivers. Since the 347th is a Reserve Regiment, the entire crest is surmounted by the figure of the Minuteman, symbol of perpetual preparedness. This photo taken from the original History book is in Color... All subsequent books that were printed the Crest is in Black & white. The Crest was designed by pfc Jack Stuart, Company "E", 347th Infantry. Her Dad (Edward J. Gorman) was in the 345th Regiment (Company G). Karen said she just received the most recent Golden Acorn News, and one of the stories reminded her husband that he had taken pictures of these grave markers while on a trip to Europe several years ago. They are from 2 different military cemeteries (Hamm in Luxembourg and St. Avold in France). There is also a photo of the 87th Division plaque at the Bastogne memorial. She wanted to pass them along in tribute....and to anyone who might be interested. If any family member of these men see this - please let us know. Thanks to wonderful people like the Gorman's - who pull out their pictures and send them to this site - for all to view. .. That's what this link of photos galleries are all about... Prayers and Thoughts for Families of Virginia Tech : Today we went to Jefferson Barracks Park - St. Louis, MO. We sat on a bench overlooking the Mississippi River and ate our lunch. We met 3 wonderful Veterans who were at the Battle of the Bulge Monument that is located by this beautiful overlook of the river. We listened to many interesting stories from them about their time in the war, and thanked them for their service. As is with every Veteran we seem to meet - we also discussed many other topics - asking them many questions about life, how they have endured many hardships, and still came through emotionally and have such a zest for everyday things.. We paused for a moment of prayer for all the families of Virginia Tech - noting the flags in the park at the Battle of the Bulge monument were half mast in mourning for them. This gallery is for all at Virginia Tech who are going through hard times, sadness, or emotional duress. You are forever changed, but do know many have you in their thoughts and prayers, and we hope for comfort and peace in your heart in the days ahead.. TUSCON, ARIZONA - Presidio Park - BATTLE OF THE BULGE MONUMENT : 6ft.high/5 feet wide - weighing 2800 pounds. What a beautiful Monument! The Chapter #53 Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge (VBOB) are very proud of this monument, so I decided to have a gallery of it's own to have it noticed and picture proudly displayed! It can also be viewed under the gallery titled: "87th Infantry Division" - all monuments, signs, and plaques that Honor or Recognize this division/units - especially Battle Of The Bulge" - Page 2. This Battle of the Bulge Monument is located at: Presidio Park facing the City Hall and Federal Bldg in Tucson, Arizona. Southern Arizona Chapter #53 VBOB dedicated this monument on May 30 2003. Chapter President John Westover headed up the project. National President Lou Cunningham oversaw the dedication. Per Mr. George W. McGee; President, Chapter 53 VBOB - Southern Arizona: "A lot of work went into the project, and we give so much thanks to the chapter president at that time, John Westover, for all the work he did. Mr. Westover designed the original sketch, and then had an artist finish it. The monument was built in Tucson. The monument was funded entirely by donations by members of Chapter 53, of which there were approximately 65 members at that time. We have presently about 50 members." Mr. Westover passed away in June of 2005. Mr. George W. McGee was nominated and elected to the office soon after. Last year, Mr. McGee had photos of the front and back enlarged to poster size. He then made a plywood replica about four feet high that will now be included in their Veterans Day parade each year. They had it mounted in an open army trailer behind a 1943 Jeep that had been restored by one of their members. They are proud that they received the, "MOST OUTSTANDING VETERANS AWARD" in last November's parade out of 400 entries! I would like to invite any members out there to have their picture taken with the monument - and I would add them to this indiviual gallery! Anyone else also invited to do so, along with why the monument is special to you. And as always, any comments or general thoughts are always welcome to this site for all to read.. 87th Signal Company - 87th Infantry Division in Honor of John S. Nelson II : John S. Nelson II was an officer in the 87th Signal Company, responsible for the 87th Signal Company photos. His son, John III, also has censor's proofs of many combat and operations photos. He also has some interesting memorabilia...a section of communications cable they removed from behind enemy lines along the Siegfried line, a waffen ss sword that he believes came from Buchenwald. Per Mr. Nelson's son: "Friends, I have gone to Buchenwald each of the past two years - along with Koblenz, Bastogne, etc - trying to figure out where they really were. The written records are incomplete and contradictory. My dad died long ago after a tough life. It would be most helpful to find someone who knew him. I went to the 2003 reunion courtesy of Gladwin but no one there knew anyone from the 87th Signal Company. It also seemed like these were mostly enlisted men and the officers were - well, officers and separate. So I could really use some actual details, like how did they get to Buchenwald to take the photo in this gallery I submitted to you. Can anyone help? Not many of my materials are scanned as they are in a scrapbook that I have been reluctant to disassemble. But I could if they would be of real value. Thanks in advance for any advice you can give." St. Nazaire, France Memorial : Dedicated to the US Army Expeditionary Forces(A.E.F.)of World War One, at St. Nazaire, France, their landing place April, 1917. A.E.F. Memorial in St. Nazaire Harbor. With outstreached arms and a sword in his hand, a doughboy stands on the back of a giant eagle that has just landed. It was designed by Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, Sculptress, with Studio in New York City. My father, Florence J. McAuliffe was a sculptor in her employ and worked on creating this monument. The monument was destroyed by the Nazis during their occupation of France in 1940. St. Nazaire became an important Nazi Submarine Base in WW-II.... A British raid on the base was a complete disaster and failure in 1942. I retain to this day the cast iron eagle's claw which was used as a model for the monument. MARDASSON MEMORIAL - BASTOGNE, BELGIUM : Memorial and Historical Center nearby. The Mardasson Memorial is one huge monument in Bastogne,Belgium. Top pic is of the Memorial itself. Bottom pic shows memorial and the nearby Historical Center. One of the supporting columns of the Mardasson Memorial, of which there are many....has the insignia or logos of each Division.... one being the "Golden Acorn" of the 87th Infantry Division. HYANNIS, CAPE COD - MASSACHUSETTS - BATTLE OF THE BULGE MONUMENT DEDICATION : Dedicated by the Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge at the Sept. 1996 VBOB reunion at Hyannis, Cape Cod Massachusetts. The monument is on the Town common at the east end of Main Street. The Monument was donated by Mr. De Christopher of the DeChristopher Monument Works of Philadelphia. Stanley Wojtusik was acting President at the time and chairman of the Reunion. There were over 400 in attendance! WREATHS ACROSS AMERICA - December - 2007 : Vans arrived in Foxboro, MA on Monday from Maine on its journey to Arlington Cemetery , VA. The wreaths will be distributed to hundreds of volunteers to be placed at the burial stones of our beloved veteran Heros. The Cent. Mass. Chapter-22, Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge will be represented at the Cemetery when the parent Organization pays their respects at The Wreath Laying at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and at their own Monument, a gift of the Belgium and Luxembourg Governments. We shall join our comrads at Arlington, VA on December 13-17 for the annual Commemorative Ceremony of the VBOB and lay wreaths at the Unknown Soldiers Monument and then at our Monument at Arlington Cemetery. Our Monument is a gift of the Belgium and Luxembourg Governments whom US soldiers liberated from the Nazis in WW-II. My cousin, Mary McAuliffe of Nevada voliunteered to lay wreaths this year. Our National President is Stan Wojtusik, who is on the Board of Directors of Wreaths of America. We are privilaged to join in honoring all our Veterans at this time of year. Respectively, John E. McAuliffe, President, Cent. MA Chapter-22 VBOB Update February 2008: We hope to have photos of Mr. McAuliffe's participation soon. Because of his sharing of this event - I contacted the national cemetery here in St. Louis - Jefferson Barracks and found they were participating in this event.
